After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 forced the United States to join World War II, the U.S. government issued special currency that was valid only in Hawaii and other areas of the Pacific being liberated by American troops. These “emergency” issues were deliberately made easy to identify, so that if large quantities fell into enemy hands, the government could declare them worthless. Included are:

• All four denominations ($1, $5, $10 and $20 notes).
• Brown seals and serial numbers, each note overprinted with “HAWAII” on both front and back.
• Notes made for only two years, accounting for less than one percent of all U.S. currency printed in the same series in the wartime era.
• Currency that has narrowly survived after most of the notes were worn out or damaged in circulation, or destroyed by the U.S. government after the war.
